The EntityManager operation executes an SQL query in that transaction; the persistence context is flushed and closed when the transaction commits (when the method returns). The returned Item entity instance is in detached state. If a client calls save(), a system transaction starts. The given detached instance is merged into a (new) persistence context. Any changes made on the detached Item instance are flushed and committed to the database. A new handle to the now up-to-date Item instance is returned.
